Stop-Motion Animation
Pixilation Short- The Magic Room
A young man uses his magic powers to make his bedroom come to life.
The original idea was to present myself interacting with my bedroom and my closet, however, I couldn’t shoot the images if I wasn’t behind the camera. Thankfully, my brother allowed me to use him and his bedroom instead. The involvement of the stuffed Tigger at the climax was not planned at all. My father, who assisted me in animating the clothes attacking my brother, proposed the idea during the shoot.
This was my first stop-motion working with a person, and it was fun gaining experience on how to direct a person to pose, where to look, and what faces to make. Without owning a full-sized tripod, I managed to shoot this project using Stop Motion Studio Pro with my iPhone 12 Mini attached to a mini-tripod placed on a drawing board on top of a carry-on sized suitcase.
The biggest challenged I faced when filming this was clarifying what I wanted my brother to do, as he could not picture my ideas until he watched the finished product. I would also like to fix the sound effects that I used for the sheets and the drawers as they are too quiet.
Paper Animation Short- Fairy in the Garden
A fairy exploring a garden and summoning flowers.
A very simple animation with no narrative as it was my first time animating with paper. I originally wanted the fairy puppet to dance, but the way the puppet was constructed made the movements very limited.
Everything was painted with watercolors on watercolor paper. Because I filled the space on the paper as much as possible, I did not anticipate it to distort even after I cut the pieces out. That, and the small size of the puppet, the flowers, and the set, made the animating process very difficult. Despite that, the time that it took to shoot was not as long as the time it took to paint and cut out everything. Next time I will definitely consider to scale the set and puppets up (and to make sure I don’t leave the tape exposed, oops).
This was shot using Stop Motion Studio Pro with my iPhone 12 Mini on a mini-tripod stacked on some boxes.
Claymation Short- The Good Job Box
A stop-motion story of a magical box with chaos seeping out.
This idea came to me when I remembered Meredith Monk’s “Double Fiesta” during my walk to the train station from school. Having some experience making stop-motion videos with clay from middle school, I felt confident that I could execute what I was imagining very well.
It took about a month to complete, with half of the shooting taking place on a shelf of a closet in a cruise ship cabin as I was away traveling across the Atlantic for two weeks. From the point where the background transitioned from white to black, I was back at home filming underneath an ironing board with a large flashlight resting on it, pointing downward at the scene.
Originally, there were going to be more shapes added with rubberhose characteristics while adding another minute of the song. However to meet the deadline for this short’s completion, my priority was to give the proper ending I’ve decided on since its conception. Regardless, I am very proud of how this short turned out despite it’s obvious mistakes. It challenged me on my animation skills, how I can manipulate the clay figures, and my editing skills for video and sound. Someday, I would like to add those extra scenes and release an extended version of this short.
